# Domains

> Your shop address on the ItemShop domain, and connecting your own domain with DNS records.

Every shop works right away at an address on the ItemShop domain, built from the shop's identifier. You can also connect **your own domain** (e.g. `shop.yourserver.com`) so the shop looks professional and players trust it. The HTTPS certificate is issued automatically.

> [!NOTE]
>
> In ItemShop 3.0 your site (the code project) is hosted at the same address — the ItemShop subdomain or your own domain. See [Build and hosting](https://andcze.mintlify.site/en/site/build-hosting.md).

## Shop address

You set the shop identifier when creating the shop; the owner can change it in the shop's advanced settings.

| Rule | Value |
| - | - |
| Length | 3–50 characters |
| Allowed characters | lowercase letters, digits, `-` and `_` |
| How often you can change it | once every 30 days |
| Previous identifier | reserved for you for 30 days |

> [!WARNING]
>
> After changing the identifier, old links to your shop may stop working. Pick a short, readable identifier from the start.

## Connect your own domain

You need access to the DNS settings at the provider where you bought the domain (or in Cloudflare, if that's where you manage DNS).

**1. Enter the domain**

In the shop's domain settings, enter the address where the shop should live. A subdomain is best, e.g. `shop.yourserver.com` — that leaves the main domain for your website.

**2. Copy the DNS records**

The panel shows the required records: type, name and value. Copy them exactly, with no extra spaces.

**3. Add the records at your DNS provider**

In your domain provider's dashboard, open DNS zone management and add each record.

**4. Check the configuration**

The panel checks **each record separately** and shows for each one whether it's correct — and if not, what value it currently sees. The domain becomes active once the main record is correct and the HTTPS certificate is ready.

### Example records

For the subdomain `shop.yourserver.com`, one record that routes traffic is usually enough:

| Type | Name | Value |
| - | - | - |
| CNAME | `shop` | target shown in the panel |
| TXT | name shown in the panel | value shown in the panel |

The **TXT** record proves the domain is yours — add it if the panel shows it. For a main domain (`yourserver.com`) the panel shows records for `@` and `www`; add both. Many providers don't handle main domains well — use a subdomain there; a main domain is easiest to connect through Cloudflare.

### Domain status

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **None** | no custom domain connected; the shop runs at its ItemShop address |
| **Waiting for DNS** | domain saved, records don't point to ItemShop yet — wait and check again |
| **Active** | records are correct, certificate ready, the shop runs on your domain |
| **Error** | something is wrong — compare your records with the ones in the panel |

DNS changes usually spread within a few minutes to an hour. If nothing works after an hour, check the record with `dig CNAME shop.yourserver.com` and compare the TXT record name with the panel.

## Domain on Cloudflare

If your domain's DNS is on Cloudflare, the panel detects it and offers:

* **Open DNS in Cloudflare** — a link straight to your zone's DNS records page in the Cloudflare dashboard, where you add or fix the records,
* **Add records automatically** — the panel adds or updates the records for you (on first use it may ask you to connect your Cloudflare account). It's safe to click again.

Records with the Cloudflare proxy turned on are also recognized as correct.

## Disconnect the domain

Removing the domain moves the shop back to its ItemShop address. Players who saved your domain will no longer reach the shop through it — do this deliberately.
